Man Made Mountains, like many bands from Canada, have humble rural roots. Hailing from the remote west coast island of Quadra, a community with a population comprised of mostly, loggers, fishermen and draft-dodgers. The four members: Christian Carmen, Lawrence Butler, Adrien Doering and Brynne Ewart-Armstrong, formed in 2004 following the disbanding of a group with fellow Quadrite, Ryan Guldemond (Mother Mother, Last Gang Rec) and were drawn to the urban metropolis of Vancouver, B.C. where they spent their first years there trying different formulas and different names. One night playing at a local dive, under the handle Massive Air Bludgeon, the group was given a mere 15 minute slot. The performance attracted the attention of two Vancouver singers, Ani Kyd (Ani Kyd, Alternative Tentacles) and Chris “The Heathen” Valagao (Zimmer’s Hole, Century Media). With lofty plans in their heads the six musicians combined to form Approach the Throne, the world’s first and only “monarch metal” band. It was during this time, while sharing a rehearsal space with Strapping Young Lad, the four Quadra boys met producer/engineer, Rob Shallcross (Reversed Records). However, Approach the Throne’s reign was short-lived, with the singing duo finding themselves spread too thin over multiple projects. With their departure, the band was back to its original form. They became, from that point on, Man Made Mountains. Having amassed an impressive amount of original material over the previous few years, they decided that they were more than capable of filling the vocal void themselves. Aided by the expertise of Shallcross, they’ve released their debut EP and are looking to the horizon. The self titled album gives its listeners a full spread of MMM’s musical pantheon. Heavy in nature, they dip in and out of the sound that might typically be labeled “heavy metal”, but have much more to offer than just fist-pounding anthems. With thundering distorted pulses morphing into dreamy lulls, Man Made Mountains’ sound is not unlike a mountain range itself.

Broad at the base,
Sharp at the top.
Now going up,
Now coming down.
Often spanning great distances,
Other times, reaching a plateau.
Sometimes calm and peaceful like an untouched snow-capped peak,
And then furious and crashing like an avalanche.

Just don’t ask us what genre we fit into…
Make the ascent…
